Road Traffic Accidents in Singapore

Information on what to do in the event of a car crash in Singapore and how to report the accident to the police. Information includes details on how to proceed if there are no injuries and if people are hurt.

In the event of an accident everyone involved must stop immediately and ascertain if anyone is injured.

If no one is injured it is not necessary to inform the police, except in particular circumstances (See Reporting to the Police).

If someone is injured a report must be made to the police with 24 hours.

In either case inform the insurance company as soon as possible, using the GIA Motor Accident Report form, which is available from the insurance company.

The insurance company will determine the liability and fault after its investigation into the accident. If a traffic violation is suspected, the insurance company will also bring this to Traffic Police's attention.

An accident report can be amended by the person who made the report. Obtain an addendum from the insurance company and submit the amendment using this form to GIA Record Management Centre.

  • GIA Records Management Centre (GIARMC)
At: 48 Amoy Street Singapore 069874
    Tel: 6324 7447/8
    Fax: 6226 1280
    Website
Open: 09:00-17:00 Mondays to Fridays and 09:00-12.00 on Saturdays

If no one is injured

  • Make sure the vehicles are not causing an obstruction
  • Put a warning sign 50 metres away from the vehicle to warn other traffic
  • Drivers should exchange their personal particulars (names, addresses and vehicle registration numbers) with the other party. Anyone who refuses to do so at the scene must lodge a police report within 24 hours, otherwise they will be committing an offence under the Road Traffic Act
  • Make a note of all the circumstances of the accident
  • Photograph the damage and positions of the vehicles if this can be done safely
  • Submit any claim to the insurance company as soon as possible

If someone is injured

  • Call 999 or 995 to report the accident
  • Help the injured person if possible, while waiting for the police to arrive
  • All uninjured people should stay at the scene
  • Move the vehicles only if it is necessary to get an injured person out
  • Make a note of the following for the police report:
    • Date and time of the accident
    • Location
    • Details of witnesses
    • Damage and position of the vehicles (it can be useful to take a photo or make a sketch)
    • The weather and road condition
  • Submit any claim to the insurance company as soon as possible.
Reporting to the Police

Accidents only have to be reported to the police if:

  • An injury has occurred
  • No one was injured but the accident involved a government vehicle or damage to government property. Government vehicles include QX and MID plate vehicles, and all vehicles belonging to the Prime Minister's office, Judiciary, and all government ministries (even those with non-QX and non-MID plates)
  • A foreign vehicle was involved. This includes a vehicle from another country such as Malaysia, or with number plate prefixes of USN or USG registered cars, or those owned by visiting forces present in Singapore or insured by a foreign insurance company (e.g. domiciled outside Singapore)
  • A pedestrian or cyclist was involved
  • It is a non-injury "hit-and-run" case

The report must be made within 24 hours of the accident.

The report can be made at any police station, Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) or Neighbourhood Police Post (NPP).

A copy of the report will be issued free to the person making the report.

The report can be amended by completing an amendment form, available at the Traffic Police Department  or by writing to the Head Investigation, Traffic Police, stating the amendments:

  • Head Investigation
    Traffic Police Department
    10 Ubi Ave 3, Singapore 408865

Any person directly involved in the accident may purchase a copy of the other party's accident report.
