Just when they were getting comfy, Avondale Grammar School is packing their bags to relocate to Phoenix Park, at 318 Tanglin Road. Head of School, Mr Martin Tait, explains the school was sad to receive the news from the Singapore Land Authority, that a road will be built through the school grounds in Toa Payoh to accommodate the new MRT circle line in 2010. "Our first home here in Toa Payoh has been a lovely start for our school", he said. "But you can't stop progress and the move to Phoenix Park is a positive relocation for the school", he added.
The new site at Phoenix Park is set on a hill overlooking the Brunei Embassy and is a gorgeous "black and white" style building. The site will undergo renovations over the next 4 months including the creation of a sporting oval, the installation of a pool and the complete fit out of the classrooms. The renovations will be complete by the end of November, ready to begin the new school year on 25th January 2010 at the new location.
The convenient location for expatriate families is expected to further grow enrolments. Avondale Grammar School opened its doors in July 2007, with just 17 students. The school has experienced steady growth, with now over 140 students. The school follows an Australian-based curriculum and includes daily Mandarin or French lessons.
"Avondale Grammar School is unique, because we offer a small nurturing environment with low teacher to student ratios", said Mr Tait. The school offers a very attractive 1 teacher to 11 students in Kindergarten to Year 2 in all morning sessions. Due to the small size of the school, all numeracy and literacy classes for all age groups are held in the morning. "The Phoenix Park site can hold 300 students and we will cap our enrolments at this level, to ensure we maintain the intimate environment our parents are looking for", said Mr Tait.
Another unique aspect of the school is their obligation-free trial day. Children can spend the day in an Avondale classroom to experience first hand what the school is like and how they feel in the environment.
"We are thrilled with the new site and the improved facilities", said Mr Tait. "Nothing else will change – our curriculum and commitment to low teacher to student ratios will not change, just the location", he said. The School has organized a fun day at Phoenix Park for current students and a family barbecue in late November, to ensure everyone is familiar with the new grounds well before 2010. "It is wonderful to be part of the second chapter of Avondale Grammar School", said Mr Tait.
