Love is like a red, red rose...

Roses and chocolates, sparkling jewels and candlelit dinners, and of course, romantic greeting cards... these are the trappings of Valentine's Day. There are various theories as to the origin of this day, many of them look to Roman pagan festivals, but the tradition of exchanging messages in cards goes back over 150 years.

Saturday is Valentine's Day

The tradition of Valentine's Day being for lovers has extended, and now for many, it's an opportunity to express affection and appreciation to family and friends too – not just a romantic partner.

So if you want to show someone you care with gifts and dinner, AngloINFO is a good place to begin. In the Shopping & Style category of The AngloFILE directory of businesses and services, you'll find florists, jewellers, gift shops and more. Once the gift is taken care of you might want to browse the category Restaurants to find the right venue for a dinner.

Why not make a day – or weekend – of it: have a look in the AngloINFO What's On Guide to find an art exhibit, concert or maybe a show you want to go to.

If you're still stuck for ideas, why not use AngloINFO Local Discussions to ask other locals for suggestions. And if all else fails, you can always send a digital card - there's a selection to choose from in the Postcards category.
