In Malaysia, the long-distance railway mainly runs on single-track past palm plantations and jungle. Trains in Malaysia and Thailand run on metre-gauge track, narrower than European standard gauge. There is one mainline station in Singapore, Tanjong Pagar Train Station, with a service that runs directly to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Bangkok. It is owned and run by Malaysian Railways.
Train ServicesSingapore to Kuala Lumpur: Express trains from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur take between five and a half and six hours. The service runs approximately three times a day and all trains are air-conditioned. Singapore to Bangkok: The journey by train is 1,946 Km (1,249 miles) and takes about 48 hours. Departures are daily, and trains have comfortable sleeping-berths. Change trains at either Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth or Kuala Lumpur and Hat Yai. Eastern and Oriental ExpressThe Eastern & Oriental Express (E&O) is a luxury tourist train for holiday and sightseeing trips. Journeys depart from Singapore's Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and include sightseeing tours in Penang and Kwai. The E&O runs special promotions at various times of the year.
